Marsabit-Bound Woman Nabbed with Cocaine Concealed in Private Parts at Odda Roadblock

In a daring and calculated drug trafficking attempt that reads like a scene from a Hollywood crime thriller, detectives stationed at the Odda roadblock in Moyale, Marsabit County, uncovered a significant consignment of cocaine that was being smuggled in one of the most unusual and extreme ways.

The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Caroline Thiunguri Kabonyi, was dramatically intercepted while travelling aboard a Toyota Probox bound for Marsabit. The vehicle, which was ferrying several passengers along the busy Moyale-Marsabit highway, was flagged down for a routine check at the Odda roadblock — a standard security measure employed in the northern region to curb contraband trafficking and improve border security.

According to police sources, what initially appeared to be a normal checkpoint stop quickly turned into a full-blown drug bust after Caroline’s behavior raised suspicion among the officers conducting the search. While her fellow passengers willingly submitted to the security checks, Caroline adamantly refused to be searched, raising eyebrows among the multi-agency team manning the post.

Officers reported that her defiance, coupled with her visible unease, set off immediate alarm bells. Sensing that something was amiss, the officers called in detectives from Moyale Police Station for further interrogation. Upon arrival, the detectives decided to escort Caroline to the Moyale Sub-County Referral Hospital for a medical examination to determine whether she was concealing anything.

It was at the hospital, under the guidance of medical professionals, that the shocking discovery was made. Hidden inside her private parts were eight tightly wrapped pellets of cocaine, weighing a total of 414 grams. The street value of the seized drugs is estimated at a staggering Ksh1,656,000, confirming fears that Caroline was engaged in the trafficking of hard drugs across regional borders.

The narcotics, securely packaged and designed to evade the scrutiny of law enforcement, were removed under medical supervision and immediately seized as exhibits to aid in the upcoming court proceedings.

Caroline Thiunguri Kabonyi is currently being held at Moyale Police Station as detectives wrap up their investigations before she faces formal charges in court. The Moyale Sub-County security team has lauded the vigilance and cooperation of the officers at the Odda roadblock for thwarting what would have been a successful drug delivery deep into Marsabit County.

Authorities believe that the drug smuggling attempt was not a random incident but part of a larger and more organized syndicate that uses women as mules due to the challenges officers face during searches involving female suspects, especially in conservative societies. This method, albeit risky, has become a tactic used by drug cartels seeking to bypass tightened security measures along Kenya’s porous northern borders.

Speaking about the incident, a detective involved in the operation emphasized the need for continued cooperation between the public and law enforcement agencies in battling the rising cases of narcotics trafficking. “This is not an isolated case. We’ve seen an increase in drug trafficking attempts via human carriers who go to extreme lengths to hide narcotics. We urge passengers and drivers to always cooperate with routine checks, as it not only ensures their own safety but also strengthens border security.”

The Odda roadblock is a key security installation strategically located to monitor traffic flowing from the Ethiopia-Kenya border — a route increasingly flagged by anti-narcotics units due to its vulnerability to illicit smuggling activities, in cluding drugs, arms, and human trafficking.

Caroline’s arrest highlights the relentless efforts by law enforcement agencies to crack down on narcotics trade and the lengths traffickers are willing to go to evade capture. Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify Caroline’s associates and the origin of the cocaine, with detectives following leads that could potentially expose the full extent of the drug trafficking ring operating in the region.

This case also underscores the high risks involved in acting as a drug mule, especially through methods that pose severe health threats, including internal concealment of narcotics. Medical experts warn that such tactics can lead to fatal consequences if a pellet ruptures inside the body, which often causes immediate overdose and death.

As for the seized drugs, they remain securely stored as evidence, and police have confirmed that the suspect will be charged under Kenyan law for possession and trafficking of narcotic substances — a crime that carries severe penalties including long-term imprisonment.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a reminder via their social platforms that no matter how sophisticated the methods drug traffickers employ, the resolve and coordination of Kenya’s security agencies will always stand firm.

In the words of one senior detective, “No matter how sneaky the tactic, justice always has the last laugh.”
