At least 50 student leaders from the University of Kenya Students’ Union (KUSO) were arrested minutes before a press conference at a Nairobi hotel.
Police said the students were arrested on charges of organizing an illegal gathering to inform supporters ahead of a long-awaited March 20th mass rally led by leader of Azimio Raila Odinga.
The students were reportedly taken to the central police station and are expected to spend the weekend there before appearing in court on Monday.
The arrest comes days after Raila Odinga declared Monday a public holiday and called on his supporters to support his efforts to protest the high cost of living.
