Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has sparked fresh political tension after issuing a sharp warning to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, following reports of Matiang’i’s interest in contesting the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Friday, Senator Cherargei did not mince his words, accusing Matiang’i of leaving behind a dark legacy during his time as Interior Minister — a legacy, he claims, should disqualify him from seeking any public office, let alone the presidency.

“Matiang’i must first answer a few questions being asked by orphans and widows,” Cherargei stated firmly on X. “Why were so many Kenyans killed through extra-judicial killings, enforced disappearances, and political persecution during his time in office?”

Cherargei referenced the grim discovery of bodies in various parts of the country during Matiang’i’s tenure, adding that the ex-minister should come clean on these unresolved cases before seeking the public’s trust.

“During his tenure, many dead bodies were found in River Yala, Tsavo, Garissa, and even stuffed in containers,” Cherargei remarked. “These families still seek justice, and Kenyans deserve answers before he talks about leadership.”

The outspoken senator did not stop there. He further criticized Matiang’i for what he termed as an “assault on media freedom” during the government’s controversial forced migration to digital broadcasting.

“He should also explain why he used state machinery to switch off media outlets and forcibly transition the country to digital broadcasting without following the law,” Cherargei argued. “That was a direct threat to press freedom in this country.”

In a sharp parting shot, Cherargei dismissed Matiang’i’s ambitions altogether, suggesting he should seek a much smaller role in his home county instead.

“After answering all those questions, perhaps he can run for the chairman of a cattle dip somewhere in Nyamira County,” Cherargei quipped.

This fiery reaction came just hours after political murmurs confirmed that Matiang’i, under the Jubilee Party banner, is being fronted as a potential challenger to President William Ruto in the 2027 race.

Sources close to the former CS suggest that his candidature is already gaining quiet but significant support within opposition circles. Jubilee Party has reportedly endorsed Matiang’i as their preferred candidate, positioning him as the man who could unite various political factions against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

However, critics like Cherargei are determined to ensure that the ghosts of Matiang’i’s tenure are not forgotten as he attempts to reinvent his political image.

“Matiang’i cannot wash away the pain Kenyans endured under his watch,” Cherargei concluded. “We are ready to remind him and the country of that record every step of the way.”

As the 2027 political landscape begins to take shape, Matiang’i’s entry into the presidential race promises to stir not only the opposition and ruling party but also reignite debate over justice, accountability, and leadership.
