Kisumu, Kenya – In a shocking turn of events, a 23-year-old male student from Maseno University is currently in police custody following his alleged involvement in a violent robbery and rape of two female students from the same institution.
The suspect, identified as Jacktone Oluoch Owiti according to DCI reports, was apprehended at his residence in Maseno’s Chulaimbo area on May 15, 2024. The arrest followed the discovery of one of the stolen phones from the victims in his possession.
The harrowing incident reportedly took place on the night of April 14, 2024. According to reports, the two victims, both first-year students aged 19 and 20, were asleep in their shared room in the Nyawita area when they were brutally attacked by two assailants.
Armed with a machete and a dagger, the attackers kicked open the door and threatened the terrified young women with stabs should they make a sound. The assailants then proceeded to r@pe the victims before making off with their smartphones.
The ordeal was reported to the police by a member of the community policing group within the Nyawita area. Once the attackers had fled, the victims screamed for help, prompting neighbors to come to their aid and assist them in getting to a local hospital for medical attention.
Kisumu West detectives have been relentless in their pursuit of justice for the victims. Their efforts culminated in the capture of the first suspect, Jacktone Oluoch Owiti, who was paraded for identification and underwent DNA sampling before being arraigned.
The police have since obtained new leads regarding his accomplices and are actively pursuing these leads in hopes of apprehending all involved parties.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Maseno University community and beyond, highlighting the urgent need for increased security measures and support systems for students.
