Man who murdered a teacher and a police arrested – Siaya.
Police based in Siaya county are reported to have arrested a criminal who is wanted for killing a teacher and a police officer during Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Exam administration.
The arrest was made possible “following a tip-off from members of the public” according to police reports.
The 25 year old man, identified as Omondi Odipo AkA Martin A.K.A Umar who is allegedly linked to an incident, where a police officer was reported to have been stabbed to death and robbed off his rifle and that of a colleague as they were escorting an examination papers to Mahero Secondary School in Alego Usonga Sub-County in Siaya County on 20th, November 2023.
Police had earlier published names and photos of Omondi and his gang including Edwin Omondi alias Rashid, Simon Ochieng Ouma alias Ali Baba, Salim Jackoyo, and Edward Wanyama Mukanga Alas Abu Naiyah on the media outlets asking members of the public for information on their whereabouts.
The National Police Service NPS, in a statement, says, it appreciates the “swift action by members of the public” that, according to NPS “led to the arrest of the culprit, Hasting Omondi in Usenge Village within Bondo area of Siaya County, where he was hiding after committing the crime.”
The suspect is said to be held at Lwala Kotieno Police Station where several charges will be preferred against him.
Omondi is reported to come from a humble background in the Kadenge area and reportedly worked as a fisherman at Nina Beach near Lake Victoria before deciding to join a criminal gang, which, according to police “was terrorizing locals in western and Nyanza regions.
The National Police Service, speaking after the arrest, urged the rest of the gang who murdered a teacher and a police officer “to surrender to the nearest police stations.”
At the same time, police called upon members of the public to share any information on other wanted gangs to the nearest Police station or through the toll-free number 0800722203.
