A devastating accident claimed the lives of 13 individuals and left three others critically injured on Tuesday afternoon along the Londiani-Muhoroni road, a notorious stretch in Kenya’s Rift Valley. The tragic collision occurred near Pangala in the Kisumu Ndogo area when a matatu (a public service minibus) was struck head-on by an out-of-control trailer.

The crash involved a Mercedes Benz trailer, registration number KCG 089F/ZF 6346, and a Toyota matatu, registration number KCS 415Z, which was en route to Kisumu. According to initial reports, the trailer was traveling towards Londiani when its driver lost control, veering into the opposite lane and causing the fatal crash. All 13 occupants of the matatu, including the driver, perished on the spot.

The collision is said to have occurred around 1:30 PM, and eyewitnesses who were on the scene reported that the impact was so severe that the matatu was extensively damaged, making the recovery of bodies a challenging task for first responders. The three survivors, a child and two adults, were rushed to Muhoroni Sub-County Hospital with severe injuries. Medical personnel at the hospital described their condition as critical, with some expected to be transferred to larger medical facilities for specialized treatment.

The assistant chief of Kapchebwai sub-location, Gregory Kemei, confirmed that the victims’ remains were moved to the St. Vincent Mission Hospital mortuary in Muhoroni, where efforts are being made to identify the deceased and notify their families. The horrific nature of the accident has shocked the local community, with many gathering at the mortuary to offer support to grieving families.

Authorities are now conducting investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash. However, initial reports suggest that the trailer’s driver may have been speeding, leading to the loss of control. In a bizarre twist, the driver of the trailer survived the crash but fled the scene shortly afterward. The police have launched a manhunt for the missing driver, with officers calling on the public to provide any information that could lead to his arrest.

“Investigations are ongoing to trace the driver, who disappeared immediately after the incident. We urge anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward,” stated a police officer from the Kipsitet Police Station.

The accident has reignited concerns over the safety of Kenya’s roads, particularly along the Londiani-Muhoroni route, which has seen numerous fatalities in recent years. Drivers often complain of narrow lanes, poor visibility, and sharp bends, making it a hazardous journey, especially for heavy vehicles like trailers.

Efforts to enhance road safety in the region have been ongoing, with local authorities emphasizing the importance of adherence to traffic regulations. However, the frequency of accidents on this stretch of road has left many questioning the efficacy of these measures. The accident serves as a somber reminder of the need for improved infrastructure and stricter enforcement of road safety laws to protect both drivers and passengers.

As the investigation continues, the families of the victims now face the difficult task of mourning their loved ones.

In the meantime, the wreckage of both vehicles has been cleared from the accident site and towed to Kipsitet Police Station, where they will undergo further inspection as part of the ongoing probe into the cause of the accident.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the Londiani and Muhoroni communities, with residents urging the government to take immediate steps to prevent future accidents. Calls for better road maintenance and driver education have intensified, as families affected by the loss call for justice for their loved ones.

With a manhunt underway for the missing driver and authorities pushing for accountability, the nation watches as this heartbreaking case unfolds.
