The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has officially launched the 2024 national examination and assessment season. In a press briefing, KNEC CEO Dr. David Njengere outlined the key details of the upcoming Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams, emphasizing new measures taken to enhance the security and smooth administration of the exams.

According to Dr. Njengere, the total number of candidates expected to sit for the national examinations in 2024 stands at a staggering 2,279,414. This includes 965,501 candidates for the KCSE across 10,565 centers nationwide, and 1,303,913 candidates set to take the KPSEA across 35,573 centers. The increasing number of candidates reflects the continued expansion of the Kenyan education system, especially with the integration of the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) that has increased the need for standardized assessments.

KNEC’s New Security Measures for the 2024 Exams

One of the biggest challenges KNEC faces every year is ensuring that exam materials are handled securely. In a move to strengthen the integrity of the examination process, KNEC has acquired 41 new containers, bringing the total number to 617 secure containers across the country. These containers will be used for the secure storage and transportation of examination papers and materials to various centers.

“This year, we have invested heavily in ensuring that examination materials are securely stored and transported to every corner of the country,” Dr. Njengere said during the launch. “The addition of 41 containers is part of our ongoing effort to safeguard the integrity of our national examinations and to ensure smooth administration across all centers.”

These containers, strategically placed across the 47 counties, are designed to ensure that examination papers are not tampered with before they reach examination centers. Additionally, the containers will facilitate efficient distribution to the most remote areas, ensuring that every student has a fair and equal opportunity to sit for their exams without logistical challenges.

Strict Regulations in Place for Exam Administration

Apart from the new containers, KNEC has also heightened security protocols for examination centers. Supervisors, invigilators, and examiners will undergo mandatory vetting and training to ensure they adhere to the highest standards of integrity.

Dr. Njengere emphasized that malpractices and cheating will not be tolerated. “We have put strict regulations in place. Any attempt to compromise the process will be met with severe consequences. Our goal is to maintain the credibility and reliability of the national exams, which are key to the future success of our students.”

The 2024 exam season will also see the use of technology to monitor the administration of exams in real time. KNEC is partnering with government agencies to deploy CCTV cameras in select centers and to leverage digital solutions for monitoring the movement and storage of exam materials.

Nationwide Preparedness for the Exams

With over 2.2 million candidates expected to participate, schools across the country are gearing up for the major event. The Ministry of Education has confirmed that all examination centers are fully equipped to handle the expected number of students. Both primary and secondary schools have been preparing for months, with trial exams already conducted to familiarize students with the process.

In a bid to support students, the Ministry of Education, in partnership with various stakeholders, has also rolled out revision materials and exam guides to help candidates prepare adequately. Teachers have been tasked with focusing on key areas of the curriculum to ensure students are ready to perform to the best of their abilities.

Impact of the Exams on the Education System

The results of the 2024 national exams will be crucial in shaping the future of the Kenyan education system. For KCSE candidates, performance in these exams will determine their transition to higher education institutions, including universities, colleges, and vocational training institutes. For KPSEA candidates, their results will play a significant role in shaping the next steps in the new Competency-Based Curriculum system.

The success of the 2024 exams will also be closely watched by educational stakeholders, given the ongoing reforms in Kenya’s education system. As the country transitions fully into the CBC system, assessments like KPSEA are critical in identifying gaps and determining the areas where further improvements need to be made.

Conclusion

As KNEC launches the 2024 national exams season, the spotlight is on ensuring a smooth, secure, and credible examination process for over 2.2 million candidates. With additional security measures like the acquisition of new containers and strict regulations for administrators, KNEC aims to deliver a seamless process that upholds the integrity of the exams. The results of these exams will significantly impact the future of Kenya’s youth and the ongoing education reforms, making this one of the most anticipated exam seasons in recent years.
