Nairobi, Kenya — A trader is fighting for his life in Kenyatta National Hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head during violent protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday.

The incident, which left at least 16 people injured, has sparked outrage and raised fresh concerns over police conduct during public demonstrations.

Critical Condition After Brain Surgery

According to a press release from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), the unidentified male trader was rushed to the facility at 3:16 PM on Tuesday in a critical condition.

Medical reports indicate he suffered a severe brain injury and excessive bleeding from the gunshot wound. Emergency physician Dr. Janet Sugut led the team that stabilised him before he was placed on life support.

A CT scan later confirmed the bullet had struck the left side of his head. By 8:50 PM, a neurosurgical team led by Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Sam Nijru performed a two-hour operation to remove the bullet.

The hospital confirmed that the patient remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on mechanical ventilation, with his condition still described as critical but stable.

16 Injured in Protest Violence

The hospital reported receiving a total of 16 patients from the protests, with injuries ranging from gunshot wounds to blunt trauma.

  • 7 patients were admitted for further treatment
  • 9 patients were treated and discharged
  • 2 patients underwent emergency surgery
  • 4 more are scheduled for surgical procedures

One other patient, who remains unidentified, was admitted with a skull fracture reportedly caused by an assault.

KNH praised the efforts of first responders and medical staff, stating:

“We commend the swift actions of first responders and the public who ensured the timely referral of casualties to KNH. We also acknowledge the professionalism and dedication of our medical staff who continue to respond effectively under high-pressure emergencies.”

Growing Anger Over Police Conduct

While the hospital’s statement did not specify who fired the shot that injured the trader, eyewitnesses and activists have accused police of using excessive force.

The protests, initially organised over economic grievances, turned violent as clashes broke out between demonstrators and law enforcement. Social media footage showed officers firing tear gas and, in some instances, live rounds.

Human rights groups have long criticised Kenyan police for their heavy-handed tactics during protests. This latest incident has reignited calls for accountability and reform.

What Happens Next?

As the trader remains in critical care, questions linger over who was responsible for his injuries and whether authorities will take action.

Kenyatta National Hospital has promised further updates while respecting patient confidentiality. Meanwhile, activists are demanding justice, with some calling for an independent investigation into police conduct during the protests.

The incident underscores the volatile nature of public demonstrations in Kenya, where clashes between protesters and security forces often result in casualties.
