New details have emerged that today the 12 May 2023, Eastern Africa Editors’ Society EAES elected Daniel Kalinaki, the chair of the Uganda Editors’ Guild, as its next President.
According to a press release seen by k47 news, Mr. Kalinaki was elected unanimously during the Society’s Annual General Meeting by representatives from the Kenya Editors’ Guild, Tanzania Editors’ Forum and the Editors’ Guild of Ethiopia.
He will preside over the Society for the next 12 months before handing over the rotational presidency to the chair of the Tanzania Editors’ Forum, Deodatus Balile.
Mr. Kalinaki reportedly takes over from Churchill Otieno, the immediate past President of the Kenya Editors’ Guild, who has been president since the founding of the Society in 2021.
“The need for editors to cooperate and collaborate within and across borders has never been greater given the challenges facing the media industry,” Mr. Kalinaki said.
“I am grateful for the confidence of my peers, and for the tremendous work Mr. Otieno has put into getting the Society off the ground.”
A 25-year newsroom veteran, Mr. Kalinaki heads Nation Media Group’s editorial operations in Uganda which include the Daily Monitor newspaper, leading television station NTV, and two radio stations: KFM and Dembe FM.
He has previously overseen The East African newspaper, and NMG’s Africa newsroom.
At the same time, the EAES Governing Council has appointed Churchill Otieno the Executive Director of the EAES Executive Committee for a period of four years, starting from June 2023.
