DCI Athiriver Investigates Shocking Robbery Incident Amid Festive Transport Crisis
In a chilling turn of events on Christmas Eve, two passengers—a man and a woman—fell victim to a ruthless robbery after boarding a private vehicle they believed was offering a helping hand amidst transport challenges in Mlolongo, Machakos County.
According to a report from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Athiriver, the victims were waiting for a Mombasa-bound bus when a private car with three seemingly helpful occupants stopped and offered them a ride. However, the seemingly kind gesture quickly turned into a nightmare.
Ordeal Unfolds Near Simba Cement Area
Once inside the vehicle, the unsuspecting passengers were ambushed. The occupants brandished daggers, blindfolded the victims, and restrained them using ropes. The robbers then proceeded to frisk the victims for their valuables and accessed their mobile banking accounts.
The male victim, a Kiambu resident, was forced to transfer Sh340,000 from his bank accounts via mobile banking apps, along with Sh20,000 from his M-Pesa account. Additionally, his Samsung Galaxy phone and power bank, valued at Sh75,000, were stolen.
The female victim from Mombasa was not spared either. She was coerced into transferring Sh49,000 from her M-Pesa account and handing over other valuables.
Victims Dumped in Limuru
After the robbery, the gang abandoned the two victims in Ngarariga, Limuru. Local residents came to their aid and escorted them to Ngarariga Police Station, where the incident was officially reported. Fortunately, neither victim sustained serious injuries during the ordeal.
Police Heighten Festive Security Patrols
The DCI Athiriver has since taken over the investigation, intensifying efforts to track down the culprits responsible for the harrowing incident. Authorities have also heightened patrols across major travel routes and urged citizens to remain vigilant, particularly during the festive season when such crimes are prevalent.
Public Cautioned to Stay Alert
As police continue their crackdown on criminal elements exploiting holiday travel challenges, Kenyans are being urged to remain cautious when accepting unsolicited transport offers. Reporting suspicious activities to law enforcement can play a crucial role in preventing such incidents.
This unfortunate event is a reminder of the importance of safety precautions during holiday travels. Authorities remain hopeful that the suspects will soon be brought to justice, ensuring safer journeys for all during the festive season.
