Police in Isiolo County have secured an illegal firearm after a member of the public voluntarily surrendered an AK-47 rifle along with seven rounds of ammunition, in a move authorities say strengthens ongoing efforts to enhance security in the region.

According to a statement from the National Police Service, officers safely received and secured the weapon after it was handed over by a civilian. The firearm, described as an AK-47 assault rifle, is now in police custody as investigations continue to establish its origin and whether it may have been linked to any criminal activity.

Isiolo County has, in the past, faced security challenges linked to illicit arms trafficking and cross-border criminal networks. Police say voluntary disarmament plays a crucial role in preventing violent incidents, cattle rustling, and other armed crimes that can destabilize communities.

Authorities are now urging anyone still in possession of unauthorized firearms to voluntarily present them at the nearest police station. The move, they say, will not only prevent potential legal consequences but also contribute to broader national security efforts.
