Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has made a stunning revelation that has rocked the club’s fanbase, claiming the hierarchy at Manchester United wanted him to leave during last summer’s transfer window. Speaking in an emotional interview with Portuguese broadcaster Canal 11, the midfielder admitted the episode still weighs heavily on his mind and has left him deeply saddened.

Fernandes revealed that he clearly sensed the club would not have stood in his way had he chosen to leave. According to the United captain, he even raised the issue directly with the club’s directors but felt they lacked the “courage” to make a firm decision.

“I have that in my head,” Fernandes said, underlining how the situation has stuck with him. “I told the directors this, but I think they didn’t have the courage to make that decision.”

The Portugal international explained that his choice to remain at Old Trafford was influenced by several factors, including family considerations and his genuine affection for the club. Crucially, a conversation with the manager also played a decisive role in convincing him to stay.

“I decided to stay, also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely like the club,” Fernandes explained. “The conversation with the manager also made me stay. But from the club’s side, I felt a bit like, if you leave, it’s not so bad for us.”

Saudi Interest and a Summer of Doubt

Fernandes’ comments come against the backdrop of strong interest from Saudi Arabia, where clubs such as Al-Hilal were reportedly prepared to table massive offers. United were believed to be weighing up whether to cash in, given the scale of the potential fee and Fernandes’ age.

Despite the financial temptation, Fernandes insisted loyalty mattered more than money. However, the feeling that the club may have been willing to let him go has clearly left emotional scars.

“It hurts me a lot,” he admitted. “More than hurting, it makes me sad.”

“I Always Give Everything”

The midfielder also defended his commitment to the club, stressing that he has never shied away from responsibility, regardless of form or criticism.

“I’m always available. I always play, good or bad. I give my all,” Fernandes said. He added that it pains him to see situations around him where, in his view, some players do not show the same level of dedication to defending the club’s badge.

“You see things around you, players who don’t value the club as much and don’t defend the club as much… that makes you sad,” he added.

Fans React as Questions Grow

Fernandes’ remarks have sparked intense debate among supporters. Many fans have rallied behind their captain, praising his honesty and commitment during a difficult period for the club. Others, however, see his comments as a sign of deeper structural issues at Manchester United, including uncertainty over leadership, recruitment, and long-term vision.

As United continue to rebuild and chase consistency, Fernandes remains one of their most influential figures on the pitch. Yet his candid interview has exposed a fragile relationship between player loyalty and club decision-making.

For now, Bruno Fernandes is still wearing the captain’s armband and giving everything for Manchester United. But his words have made one thing clear: last summer’s transfer window left wounds that may take a long time to heal.
