As the festive season gains momentum, revellers are flocking popular entertainment spots to unwind and celebrate. However, authorities are urging caution, as not everyone in these establishments has good intentions.
Recent incidents highlight a concerning trend of drink spiking, commonly referred to as ‘pishori’ schemes, where unsuspecting individuals fall victim to theft after their drinks are drugged.
Diani Hotel Incident: A Cautionary Tale
In a chilling incident captured on surveillance footage, a man on a work-related trip became a victim of this growing menace at a popular Diani hotel. After an evening of socializing and drinks, the man retired to his hotel room accompanied by a woman he had met earlier at the venue.
The following morning, CCTV footage revealed the woman leaving the hotel room shortly before noon. By then, she had already made away with two mobile phones, a watch, and several ATM cards belonging to the incapacitated man.
To add salt to injury, the suspect reportedly drained the victim’s bank accounts the next day before switching off his phones to cover her tracks.
Authorities on High Alert
Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the case and pursuing the suspect. Authorities have urged revellers to remain vigilant, avoid accepting drinks from strangers, and ensure their beverages are not left unattended.
How to Stay Safe This Festive Season:
- Avoid leaving your drink unattended.
- Be cautious about overly friendly strangers.
- Use cash instead of carrying multiple bank cards.
- Report suspicious activity to security or authorities immediately.
As the festive cheer fills the air, let’s remain cautious and ensure celebrations don’t turn into nightmares. Stay safe and alert!
