Kakamega Officer Arrested for Extortion
Following investigations into a complaint from matatu operators in Kakamega County, EACC on Friday reportedly arrested Monyenye Dennis Marunga, a Traffic Police Rider, based at Kakamega Police Station who impounded and detained a matatu and ordered the complainant to pay him a “forgiveness fee” in order to forgive him and release the detained vehicle.
The suspect, according to EACC, famously known as “Denno” within the matatu industry in Kakamega, has allegedly developed a specialization in arbitrarily impounding and detaining public service vehicles, without cause, and thereafter demanding money from the victims, as a condition for releasing the detained and unbooked vehicles.
Prior to this arrest, the Commission says it had received numerous complaints against him.
He was processed at EACC Bungoma Regional Office and later booked at Bungoma Police Station pending further action.
“Meanwhile, the Commission is working with the Office of the Inspector General and other Government Offices towards addressing the challenge of corruption and extortion on Kenyan roads.” A statement from NPS X platform formerly twitter read.
