Nyakundi took to social media to express his outrage, stating, “Your president rocking Zegna after inheriting a ‘dilapidated economy’. About Sh150,000 a pair.” This statement quickly gained traction, sparking a heated debate over the president’s spending habits and the perceived insensitivity of such extravagance during a period of economic difficulty for many Kenyans.
The shoes in question are reportedly from Ermenegildo Zegna, an Italian luxury fashion house known for its high-end menswear. At approximately Sh150,000 (around USD 1,050) per pair, these shoes are seen by critics as a stark contrast to the financial hardships faced by the average Kenyan citizen.
Robert Alai, Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Kieleleshwa, also joined the conversation, directly addressing President Ruto in his social media post. Alai’s message read: “Hello @WilliamsRuto. What validation are you seeking with Ksh 150,000 shoes? I can show you quality shoes worth only Ksh 10,000 or even 20,000. You are leading a third world country. Stop wasting money. Practise the austerity which you preach.”
Alai’s comments underscore a broader sentiment of frustration among Kenyans who feel that their leaders are not in touch with the everyday struggles of their constituents. This incident has amplified calls for austerity measures and a more modest approach to governance, especially in light of the economic challenges that the country is facing.
