Police Seize 48kg of Cannabis, Arrest Suspect in Kakamega County
Police officers in Kakamega County have scored a major breakthrough in the ongoing war against drug trafficking after seizing a large consignment of narcotics and arresting a suspect during an intelligence-led operation along the busy Kisumu–Kakamega Road.
The successful operation, carried out by officers acting on credible intelligence, targeted a public service vehicle (PSV) suspected of ferrying illicit drugs. Following the interception of the vehicle, officers conducted a thorough search that led to the recovery of dry green plant material believed to be Cannabis sativa, carefully concealed in several bags and a sack.
According to police reports, the narcotics had been packaged into multiple bales, an indication of organized trafficking rather than personal use. The total weight of the recovered drugs was estimated at approximately 48 kilograms, with a street value of about KSh 1.4 million, making it one of the notable drug seizures recorded in the region in recent months.
Drugs Hidden in Plain Sight
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspected cannabis was cleverly hidden among other items in the vehicle in an apparent attempt to evade detection. However, the intelligence-led nature of the operation enabled officers to act swiftly and decisively before the drugs could reach their intended destination.
One suspect was arrested at the scene and immediately escorted to a police station in Kakamega County. The recovered narcotic drugs were secured as exhibits in accordance with police procedures. Authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently being held in lawful custody and is expected to be processed and arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests as detectives continue to pursue leads aimed at dismantling the wider drug trafficking network behind the consignment.
Renewed Crackdown on Drug Trafficking
The seizure highlights the National Police Service’s renewed and sustained efforts to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activities across the country. Drug abuse and trafficking remain a serious concern in Kenya, with authorities warning that narcotics pose a grave threat to public health, youth development, community safety, and national security.
Senior officers have reiterated that intelligence-led operations, community policing, and inter-agency collaboration remain key pillars in disrupting drug supply chains, particularly along major highways commonly used by traffickers.
“This operation sends a strong message to individuals and criminal groups involved in drug trafficking that law enforcement agencies remain vigilant and determined to stop the spread of narcotics,” a police source said.
Public Urged to Share Information
The National Police Service has once again appealed to members of the public to play an active role in the fight against drugs by sharing information on suspicious activities within their communities. Police emphasized that public cooperation has been instrumental in many successful operations, including the latest seizure in Kakamega County.
Kenyans can report drug-related activities through the toll-free emergency numbers 999, 911, or 112. Additionally, anonymous tips can be submitted via the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline on 0800 722 203 or through WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
Authorities have assured the public that all information shared is treated with strict confidentiality.
Growing Concern Over Narcotics in Western Kenya
Western Kenya has, in recent years, emerged as one of the regions under close watch by security agencies due to increased cases of drug trafficking and abuse. Major roads linking counties and border points have been identified as key transit routes for narcotics destined for local and regional markets.
The latest seizure along the Kisumu–Kakamega Road is expected to disrupt supply chains and deter traffickers who have been exploiting public transport systems to move illegal drugs.
As investigations continue, police have vowed to intensify patrols and intelligence operations to ensure that those involved in drug trafficking are brought to justice, while communities remain protected from the devastating effects of narcotics.
