Police Crush Bandits in Tigania, Recover 150 Animals After Fierce Gun Battle

A major security breakthrough has been recorded in Tigania East, Meru County, after police officers successfully overpowered heavily armed bandits and recovered stolen livestock. The daring operation marks a significant win in the ongoing war against stock theft in Tigania and surrounding areas.

The raid followed a report of livestock theft in Kiambogo area on 19th August 2025. In swift response, the National Police Service (NPS) deployed a joint team comprising the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), National Police Reservists (NPR), Special Operations Group (SOG), and the Kenya Police Service (KPS).

According to reports, the officers intercepted the Tigania East bandits near Arow Dam in Gambela location. A fierce police gun battle in Kenya ensued, forcing the suspects to abandon their loot. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, the criminals fled the scene, leaving behind the stolen animals.

Police confirmed that 145 cows and 5 donkeys were recovered and later returned to their rightful owners. This recovery is being hailed as one of the largest Meru livestock recoveries in recent months.

The operation to flush out the bandits in Meru is ongoing, with officers intensifying patrols in border regions to curb cross-county stock theft. Security agencies have urged residents to remain vigilant and continue working closely with law enforcement by providing intelligence on suspicious activities.

In a statement, the National Police Service praised the bravery and professionalism of officers involved in the Kenya police operation, saying their rapid response and cooperation with locals ensured success. “We commend the public for the information that made this livestock recovery possible,” the statement read.

Experts note that stolen cattle in Kenya not only affect livelihoods but also fuel insecurity in rural areas. Despite government crackdowns, bandit attacks in Meru and neighboring counties remain a persistent threat.

The NPS has assured residents that security forces will sustain pressure on criminals and continue operations to restore lasting peace in Tigania East and beyond.
