Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers from Mt. Elgon region marked the end of 2024 with a celebration filled with mixed emotions, reflecting on a year of both triumphs and challenges. Gathering in a vibrant meeting, educators from three sub-counties—Elgon, Kopsiro, and Cheptais—pledged their commitment to improving their welfare through a newly formed caucus.
This caucus aims to advocate for unity and focus on the teachers’ well-being, addressing pressing issues and ensuring their voices are heard. The formation of this movement comes at a critical time as teachers navigate a rapidly evolving education landscape.
During the gathering, members expressed their collective endorsement of the Teachers for Change Movement (TCM). They believe that TCM’s agenda aligns with their goals of ensuring rightful representation in critical leadership areas, including KUPPET, KSSSA, and co-curricular activities like drama and music festivals.
Acknowledgment was also given to the National Chairman of TCM, Ndiwa Cyril Ndiwa, whose advisory role has been instrumental in fostering the spirit of unity among teachers. His guidance on the importance of collective effort was lauded as a beacon for future success.
Beyond strategy discussions, the event was a warm celebration of camaraderie. Teachers enjoyed a feast, symbolizing their determination to work together for a brighter future. The vibrant discussions around the fire exemplified their hope and aspirations for 2025 and beyond.
As the year ends, these educators remain optimistic, describing themselves as “Moguls destined for greatness.” Their determination to push for better representation and welfare serves as an inspiring narrative for the teaching profession across the country.
With their newly found unity, the teachers of Mt. Elgon are not just closing 2024 but opening a new chapter in their journey toward progress and impactful leadership.
