Kitengela, Kenya – In a bizarre turn of events, a 25-year-old man has been arrested after staging his own kidnapping to extort Ksh 100,000 from his family. The suspect, identified as Nobert Mulwo, orchestrated the act after losing his entire November salary to betting.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) uncovered the scheme during an early morning operation in Kitengela township.

The Fake Kidnapping Plot

Mulwo reportedly inflicted wounds on himself using a scalpel blade and tied his arms and legs with ropes. He then gagged his mouth with a bloody bandage to make his abduction appear authentic. The suspect was later found at Mutuku Lodgings in Kitengela, where he awaited his family’s response to the ransom demands.

According to a report filed at Kajiado Police Station, Mulwo’s family had been led to believe he was abducted by two men driving a Toyota Probox. The “kidnappers” allegedly demanded Ksh 100,000 for his release, prompting swift action by the DCI Crime Research and Operations Directorate.

The Arrest and Evidence

Upon his “rescue,” detectives quickly discovered the abduction was a hoax. Mulwo confessed that the entire operation was a ploy to recover funds lost to betting. His accomplice, identified only as Ndolo, remains at large.

Among the items recovered from the scene were:

  • Ksh 10,100 in cash
  • A handset used to communicate with the family
  • A scalpel blade and bandages used for self-inflicted injuries

The suspect has been handed over to DCI Kajiado for legal processing and is set to face charges in court.

A Warning Against Fraudulent Acts

The incident highlights the growing desperation caused by gambling losses, which often drive individuals to extreme and unlawful measures. Authorities have urged citizens to seek lawful solutions instead of resorting to criminal behavior.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives pursue Mulwo’s accomplice.
