Tensions flared in Luo Nyanza after ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga was heckled by sections of youth during her recent tour of the region. Wanga, who has been rallying support for President William Ruto and the emerging “Tutam” political alignment, faced open resistance from locals in what observers describe as a politically charged atmosphere.
According to witnesses at the event, groups of youths interrupted her address with loud chants of “Babu! Babu!”—a slogan widely associated with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. The chants signaled discontent among some residents, who appeared to reject overtures aimed at consolidating regional backing for President Ruto.
At one point, members of the crowd reportedly shouted, “Achukue huyo Ruto yake apeleke kwake,” loosely translating to “She should take her Ruto back to where he belongs.” The remarks underscored simmering political divisions in Luo Nyanza, a region historically known for its strong opposition stance in national politics.
Wanga’s tour was intended to engage grassroots leaders and encourage unity ahead of anticipated political realignments. However, the reaction she encountered suggests that not all constituents are aligned with her message. Political analysts note that Luo Nyanza remains a key battleground in Kenya’s shifting alliances, especially as leaders recalibrate their strategies ahead of future electoral contests.
Despite the heckling, Wanga maintained her composure and continued addressing supporters who had turned up for the event. Her allies argue that resistance from small but vocal groups should not be interpreted as the overall mood of the region.
The incident highlights growing political tension in parts of the country, as leaders seek to redefine loyalties and court new partnerships. With emotions running high and public discourse intensifying, all eyes remain on Luo Nyanza to see how the political landscape evolves in the coming months.
