Thousands of Kenyans have been left frustrated after being unable to access the iTax KRA portal, just hours before the deadline for filing KRA returns lapses at midnight on Monday, June 30, 2025.

According to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the deadline for filing 2024 annual tax returns is today, and those who miss it risk incurring penalties. In a final reminder shared on X (formerly Twitter), the authority urged taxpayers to act swiftly.

“We’re officially on the eleventh hour. DEADLINE is TODAY na hii ndio last chance yako ya kufile bila stress. File and pay now on itax.kra.go.ke,” KRA posted.

However, many citizens say they have been unable to log into the KRA iTax platform due to what appears to be system overload. This has caused panic among those attempting to meet the filing deadline.

Kenyans Speak Out

Several users took to social media to express their frustration:

Alli Mwamvita Mwanzu pleaded: “Kindly work on your systems.”

Brian Karanja said: “Your site is not working. We can’t even log in.”

Kevin Kamaliza added: “Nothing is happening. Kindly sort the mess with your server. We can’t log in nor change passwords.”

Franklin Kwambai questioned the integrity of the process: “Why is your portal not working? Don’t taxpayers have the right to file taxes up to 11:59 pm tonight? Why sabotage the system?”

Susan Wanjiru wrote: “And now one cannot even log in. iTax is overwhelmed!”

The complaints suggest that the iTax KRA portal is overwhelmed, possibly due to a last-minute rush as users attempt to file their KRA returns. This is not the first time that users have raised concerns about the reliability of the system during critical periods.

Request for Assistance

Another user, Ndungu Wa Wanjiru, shared a formal plea directed at the KRA Corporate team, seeking assistance after failing to log in to file his KRA PIN returns.

Despite repeated calls for KRA to extend the deadline due to the technical issues, the authority had not issued any official update by press time.

The iTax KRA platform is essential for taxpayers in Kenya to file annual returns using their KRA PIN. It is also used to access a wide range of services offered by the authority. However, today’s events raise serious concerns about the scalability and reliability of the KRA portal during peak times.

As the 11:59 p.m. deadline approaches, millions of taxpayers remain uncertain about whether they will manage to submit their KRA returns in time — or be penalized for a system failure beyond their control.
