Violence Erupts as Kenya Marks First Anniversary of Gen-Z Protests

Nairobi, Kenya – The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has issued a damning report following nationwide demonstrations marking the first anniversary of the historic Gen-Z protests. What began as peaceful rallies quickly descended into chaos, with at least eight fatalities, over 400 injuries, and widespread allegations of police brutality, media censorship, and property destruction.

The KNCHR, which monitored protests in 23 counties, condemned the “continuous violations of human rights” by both state agencies and rogue citizens, raising urgent concerns over Kenya’s adherence to the rule of law.

Key Findings from KNCHR Report

1. Right to Life & Security: 8 Dead, 400+ Injured

The most harrowing revelation from the KNCHR report is the eight confirmed fatalities, all from gunshot wounds across six counties:

  • Machakos (2)
  • Makueni (2)
  • Nakuru (1)
  • Kiambu (1)
  • Uasin Gishu (1)
  • Nyandarua (1)

Additionally, over 400 casualties were reported, including demonstrators, police officers, and journalists. Of these, 83 required specialized treatment, with eight suffering gunshot wounds.

“The right to life is sacred. We condole with the families of the deceased and demand accountability,” said Dr. Raymond Nyeris, KNCHR Vice Chairperson.

2. Mass Arrests & Illegal Detentions

At least 61 individuals were detained across the country, with Nairobi County recording the highest number. Disturbingly, the KNCHR noted unrecorded arrests, raising fears of enforced disappearances.

3. Excessive Force by Police & Security Agencies

Police were deployed in large numbers, with reports of:

  • Live ammunition & rubber bullets
  • Water cannons used against crowds
  • Unprovoked assaults on protesters

“The use of live bullets on unarmed civilians is unacceptable. We demand an independent investigation,” the KNCHR stated.

4. Criminal Infiltration & Property Destruction

In cities like Eldoret, Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kajiado, and Kisumu, hired goons allegedly infiltrated protests, inciting violence, looting, and vandalism. Businesses were ransacked, deepening public anger.

5. Media Blackout: Government Censors Live Broadcasts

In a shocking move, the Communications Authority (CA) ordered media houses to stop live coverage of protests and even removed some stations from broadcasting platforms.

The KNCHR condemned this as a direct violation of Article 34(2) of Kenya’s Constitution, which guarantees media freedom.

Why Are Kenyans Protesting?

The demonstrations mark one year since the historic Gen-Z protests, which began in June 2024 over controversial tax hikes and government corruption. The movement, led largely by young Kenyans, forced the government into concessions but left deep-seated frustrations over:

  • Economic hardship & unemployment
  • Police brutality & impunity
  • Failed governance reforms

This year’s protests were a test of Kenya’s democratic resilience—but the violent crackdown has reignited fears of state repression.

International Reactions & Calls for Justice

Human rights groups, including Amnesty International Kenya and Human Rights Watch, have demanded:

Independent investigations into killings
Prosecution of officers involved in brutality
Restoration of media freedoms

The United Nations has also expressed concern, urging dialogue to prevent further bloodshed.

Final Thoughts

The 2025 Gen-Z anniversary protests have exposed Kenya’s fragile democracy. With lives lost, media gagged, and police accused of atrocities, the government faces mounting pressure.
