The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced critical guidance for students who have been wrongly placed in the “rich parents” category. This misclassification has led to some students being denied appropriate financial aid due to their perceived family financial status. HELB, in response to the growing concerns, has opened an appeal module on their student portal to rectify these errors.

On its official X (formerly Twitter) platform, HELB released a statement, providing students a chance to request a reassessment of their band placement. The statement, also reported by K47 Digital News, emphasized that the loan application appeal module is now accessible. This means that students who feel they have been unjustly categorized can now take steps to have their cases reviewed.

HELB’s Appeal Process for Misclassified Students

HELB is urging affected students to log into their HELB portal.hef.co.ke accounts through and follow the simple steps to appeal their current band placement. According to their X post, the process involves navigating to the “appeals” tab on the portal and following a series of prompts to submit an official request for reassessment.

The move has been met with positive reactions, especially from students who found themselves in the higher band categories, which often resulted in reduced or no financial aid. Many students rely on these loans to fund their education, and any misplacement in a higher-income bracket can cause significant hardships.
