The Ministry of Education has released fresh details on the much-anticipated Grade 10 placement exercise, offering long-awaited clarity to parents, learners, and teachers across the country. With the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) results already out, the government has now confirmed how and when learners will receive their Grade 10 placement results, easing uncertainty that has dominated the education sector in recent weeks.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok announced that Grade 10 placement results will be released by Friday, December 19, marking a critical step in the transition from junior to senior school under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

KJSEA Results Released, Placement Now Underway

The announcement follows the official release of the 2025 KJSEA results, which were published earlier this month after the examinations were administered between October 27 and November 3, 2025. More than 1.1 million learners sat for the assessment, making it one of the largest national evaluations in Kenya’s education history.

KJSEA serves as the final assessment at junior secondary level and is central to determining placement into senior schools. Unlike the former KCSE system, the assessment focuses not only on academic performance but also on competencies, talents, and learner interests, which are aligned with specific career pathways in senior school.

Speaking on Monday, November 17, while addressing residents in Kikuyu, Bitok said the Ministry had deliberately structured the placement process to be fast, predictable, and transparent.

“The results are already out, and we are now finalising placement so that learners can move to senior school without delays or confusion,” he said.

How to Check Grade 10 Placement Results

In a key update for parents and candidates, Bitok confirmed that Grade 10 placement results will be accessed via SMS, ensuring nationwide accessibility.

To check placement results:

  • Candidates will send their KNEC assessment number
  • Use the shortcode 22263

According to the PS, the SMS method was chosen to ensure inclusivity, especially for families in remote areas where internet access remains limited.

“This system allows every parent, regardless of location, to access placement results easily,” Bitok said.

Placement Letters to Be Issued Before Christmas

The Ministry also confirmed that Grade 10 placement letters will be issued before Christmas, allowing families to prepare early for the next academic stage.

The placement process began roughly one week after the release of KJSEA results, in line with timelines previously communicated by the Ministry of Education. Officials say this early release is intended to reduce last-minute pressure on parents and schools ahead of the January reporting date.

Under the CBC framework, placement decisions are guided by:

  • Learner performance in KJSEA
  • Preferred career pathways
  • Available slots in senior schools
  • Institutional capacity and balance

This represents a significant shift from the score-based placement model used under the 8-4-4 system.

Reporting Date Set for January 12, 2026

Bitok reiterated that all learners placed in Grade 10 will be required to report to their respective senior schools on January 12, 2026. The reporting date aligns with the national school calendar and gives schools sufficient time to complete preparations.

According to the PS, the government has taken deliberate steps to ensure that the transition to senior school does not overwhelm institutions or disrupt learning.

“We have planned this transition carefully to ensure it is smooth and well-coordinated across the country,” he said.

No Increase in School Fees Next Year

Amid widespread concerns over the cost of education, Bitok firmly dismissed claims that school fees would rise in 2026.

“The policy on free education remains unchanged,” he stated. “There are no new fees, and if any changes were to be made, the government would communicate officially.”

The assurance is expected to bring relief to parents who feared that the rollout of senior school under CBC would come with additional or hidden costs.

Capitation Funds to Be Released Promptly

The PS also addressed concerns from school heads regarding delays in capitation funds. He said the Ministry is working closely with the National Treasury to ensure that capitation is released on time to support learning activities.

To facilitate timely funding, the Ministry is finalising a nationwide school verification exercise aimed at confirming learner numbers, registered institutions, and official school bank accounts.

Warning Issued to Unverified Schools

Bitok issued a stern warning that schools which fail to complete the verification process will not receive capitation funds.

“The verification is necessary to confirm how many learners and schools we have and to validate account details,” he said. “Funds will only be released to verified institutions.”

The verification exercise was prompted by concerns raised by the Auditor General, particularly regarding accountability, enrolment accuracy, and financial reporting within the education sector.

Learner and School Data Report Coming Soon

The Ministry is also expected to release a comprehensive report detailing the total number of learners and schools nationwide. According to Bitok, the data will be critical in shaping future planning, budgeting, and CBC implementation strategies.

As Kenya continues its transition from the 8-4-4 system to CBC, the latest announcements signal a move toward order, predictability, and accountability—key concerns repeatedly raised by parents, teachers, and education stakeholders.

With KJSEA results already released, Grade 10 placement results set to be accessed via SMS by December 19, placement letters expected before Christmas, and reporting scheduled for January 12, 2026, the focus now shifts to execution. For more than one million learners, the journey to senior school has officially entered its final countdown.
