A court in Shanzu has ruled that sect leader Pastor Paul McKenzie and 17 others will remain in detention while the state continues to mount evidence to prosecute them.
At the hearing of the verdict on the 11th, the court decided to detain the suspects for up to 30 days from May 3. Implying that they will be in pre-trial detention for the next 23 days.
The Director of Criminal Investigation had requested that Mackenzie be held for 90 days for investigation.
Mackenzie and 17 others were detained at Malindi, Marereni, Watamu, Mtwapa and Bamburi police stations on the advice of the government.
Mackenzie and co-defendants are charged under the Terrorism Act with cult activities that led to the exhumation of more than 100 bodies in Shakahola..
