An Air India pilot was detained by Canadian authorities at Vancouver International Airport after reportedly smelling of alcohol shortly before he was scheduled to operate a Delhi-bound flight, triggering a last-minute delay just days before Christmas.
The incident occurred on December 23, 2025, involving Flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi, a long-haul international service operated by the Tata Group-owned airline. According to multiple reports, the pilot’s condition raised serious safety concerns moments before boarding, prompting swift intervention by airport staff and local authorities.
As per the reports, a staff member at the airport’s duty-free store alerted Canadian authorities after either witnessing the pilot consuming alcohol or noticing a strong smell of alcohol while the pilot was purchasing liquor. Given the strict global aviation regulations regarding alcohol consumption by flight crew, the alert immediately triggered a security and safety response.
Canadian authorities reportedly subjected the pilot to a breath analyser test, which he allegedly failed. Following the failed test, the pilot was detained for further inquiry, effectively grounding him and preventing him from operating the flight. “Flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi on 23 December 2025 experienced a last-minute delay after one of the cockpit crew members was offloaded prior to departure. Canadian authorities raised concerns regarding the pilot’s fitness for duty, following which the crew member was taken for further inquiry. In accordance with safety protocols, an alternate pilot was rostered to operate the flight, resulting in the delay.”
The airline emphasized that passenger safety remains its top priority, and that it fully cooperated with Canadian authorities. An alternate pilot was immediately arranged, allowing the flight to depart later than scheduled.
Passengers on board reportedly faced delays during a peak holiday travel period, just ahead of Christmas, when international airports are typically crowded.
