Tunisian football player Nizar Essoui, 35, has died after setting himself on fire protesting against police brutality; media reports.

A Tunisian football attacker claims police charged him with terrorism when he complained about the price of bananas.

He posted a video on Facebook protesting the prosecution of a police officer for terrorism in Haffouz, Kairouan, central Tunisia.

The Sun reported on Saturday that former United States Premier League club Monastir Isaui set himself on fire outside a police station on Thursday.

He was hospitalized with third-degree burns but could not be saved.

In a viral video footage, Issaoui could be heard screaming “For a dispute with someone selling bananas at 10 dinars (£2.65), I get accused of terrorism at the police station.”

Reports gathered shows that Issoui was a free agent and played in amateur leagues until his death.

“He died yesterday [Thursday] and will be buried today,” his older brother Riyadh said.

This sparked clashes between police and angry protesters in Issaui’s hometown of Haffouz.

According to eyewitnesses, the police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators who had gathered outside the police building.
