Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a National Police Reserve (NPR) officer and recovered an AK-47 rifle believed to have been used in a series of violent robberies in the Kirindine area of Igembe South, following a meticulously coordinated security operation.
According to a statement released by the DCI on Sunday 21 Dec 2025, the arrest was carried out by a joint team of detectives drawn from Igembe South, Igembe North, and Mutuati sub-counties. The operation was launched after intelligence linked the suspect to a criminal gang responsible for a brazen robbery with violence that occurred on December 19, 2025, at Kirindini Shopping Centre.
Investigators say the robbery left residents traumatized and raised serious concerns over the misuse of firearms, particularly those associated with individuals tasked with maintaining public security. The suspect, an NPR officer entrusted with safeguarding the community, is alleged to have abused his position by participating in armed criminal activities.
Following crucial leads, detectives traced the suspect’s movements across several villages, including Kina Meru, Kiutine, and Kina-Duba. The operation culminated in his arrest after sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering by the multi-agency team.
Upon interrogation, the suspect led detectives to a location where he had buried an AK-47 rifle. The firearm is believed to have been used during the Kirindini Shopping Centre robbery. In addition to the rifle, officers recovered a magazine loaded with two rounds of 7.62 x 39 mm ammunition, further strengthening the case against him.
Detectives also confiscated the official Government-issued G3 rifle that had been allocated to the NPR officer, along with one magazine. Authorities say the recovery of both weapons raises serious questions about accountability, firearm control, and the infiltration of criminal networks into community policing structures.
The suspect is currently in police custody, where he is undergoing processing ahead of arraignment in court. Investigators have indicated that he will face multiple charges, including robbery with violence, illegal possession of a firearm, and abuse of office.
Meanwhile, the DCI has confirmed that the operation is far from over. Security teams are actively pursuing other members of the gang who remain at large. Detectives believe the suspect is part of a wider criminal network that has been terrorizing residents in parts of Igembe South and neighboring sub-counties.
The arrest comes at a time when Kenyans are celebrating the festive season, a period that often sees a spike in criminal activity. In response, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has intensified security operations across the country, focusing on intelligence-led policing and rapid response to criminal threats.
