Foreign Powers Condemn Tanzania Over ‘Shocking Killings’ After Elections – Demand Action Now!

A coalition of powerful Western nations has issued a strongly-worded joint statement condemning the recent violence and alleged human rights violations that erupted in Tanzania following the country’s elections. The governments say they are deeply alarmed by reports of extrajudicial killings, disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and alleged concealment of bodies.

The rare diplomatic intervention came from a joint statement released by the British High Commission, the Canadian High Commission, and the embassies of Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, along with the European Union Delegation in Dar es Salaam.

“We deeply regret the tragic loss of lives”

In the statement, the foreign delegations expressed regret over the tragic deaths and numerous injuries reported during and after the Tarnzanian elections. They referenced earlier remarks by the High Representative of the European Union and a joint statement by Foreign Ministers of Canada, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

The missions outlined that the Tanzanian government has repeatedly emphasized its desire for peace and stability. However, they stressed that security forces must operate with maximum restraint, especially when engaging civilians. According to the diplomats, the state must uphold constitutional rights, including freedom of information and free expression for all Tanzanians.

Calls for urgent release of detained and missing persons

The statement highlighted credible reports from both domestic and international organizations documenting disturbing abuses. Among the allegations are:

  • Extrajudicial killings
  • Enforced disappearances
  • Arbitrary arrests of political opponents
  • Concealment of bodies to hide the scale of violence

The foreign governments demanded Tanzanian authorities urgently release bodies of the deceased to their families. They also called for the immediate release of all political prisoners, and for detainees to be granted legal representation and access to medical care.

International pressure mounts for electoral accountability

Election observer missions — including the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) — have previously raised concerns about serious shortcomings in the electoral process. The foreign delegations have urged Tanzania to adopt and implement recommendations proposed by the observer teams to improve credibility and transparency in future polls.

The joint statement is one of the strongest rebukes Tanzania has faced recently from international partners, signaling widespread alarm over deteriorating human rights conditions surrounding the election aftermath.

Push for independent investigation and justice

The diplomats acknowledged Tanzania’s stated commitment to investigate the root causes of the violence. However, they insisted that any inquiry must be independent, transparent, and inclusive, bringing together civil society organizations, religious institutions, and political stakeholders.

They emphasized that justice and reconciliation are vital for restoring public trust and preventing future unrest.

What this means for Tanzania going forward

The international community’s growing involvement places Tanzania under significant scrutiny. The government may face increasing diplomatic and economic pressure if it fails to address the alleged violations and adopt recommended reforms.

As calls intensify for accountability, victims’ families and pro-democracy groups hope that this international spotlight will lead to truth, justice, and meaningful reform — rather than silence and fear.
