Prominent Activist Boniface Mwangi Held Over Terror Allegations
Kenyan human rights activist and award-winning photojournalist Boniface Mwangi was arrested on Saturday, 19 July, in a dramatic raid by detectives at his Lukenya home in Machakos County.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) alleges that Mwangi was involved in facilitating terrorist activities during the nationwide protests on 25 June 2025. His arrest has sparked outrage among civil society groups, with many questioning the legitimacy of the charges.
Mwangi’s wife, Njeri Mwangi, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express her shock, writing: “The police have come to our home in Courage Base and are taking my husband, talking of terrorism and arson! They’ve taken his gadgets and said they are taking him to DCI Hq. I can’t breathe.”
The DCI later released a detailed statement outlining the reasons for Mwangi’s arrest and the items recovered during searches at his residence and office.

According to the DCI, detectives seized:
- Two mobile phones
- A laptop
- Several notebooks
A subsequent search at Mwangi’s office at Mageuzi Hub in Nairobi’s Hurlingham area allegedly uncovered:
- Nine external hard drives
- Two additional laptops
- Company seals for Brave Media Ltd and Courage Ltd
- A company stamp
- Six cheque books
- Copies of stamp duty documents
- Two unused tear gas canisters
- One 7.62mm blank round
The discovery of the tear gas canisters and blank round has raised eyebrows, with the DCI stating that Mwangi will be charged with “facilitation of terrorist acts and unlawful possession of ammunition.”
He is currently detained at Pangani Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, 21 July.
Public Reaction: Outrage or Justified Arrest?
Mwangi’s arrest has divided public opinion. Supporters argue that the activist, known for his fierce criticism of government corruption and police brutality, is being targeted for his activism.
“This is political persecution,” said a fellow activist who requested anonymity. “Boniface has always been vocal, and now they’re using terrorism charges to silence him.”
However, some Kenyans have expressed concerns over the recovered ammunition, questioning why a human rights activist would possess such items.
“Even if he’s an activist, why does he have tear gas canisters and a blank round? That’s suspicious,” commented one social media user.

He has organized numerous protests against government corruption, earning both admiration and condemnation. In 2020, he was briefly arrested during anti-government demonstrations, which he claimed was an attempt to intimidate him.
His latest arrest comes amid heightened political tensions in Kenya, following protests against proposed tax hikes and police brutality last month. The government has since intensified crackdowns on demonstrators, with several activists reporting harassment.

“The government must ensure due process is followed. Arbitrary arrests undermine Kenya’s democracy,” said Amnesty’s Kenya chapter in a statement.
