Nairobi, Kenya – April 20, 2025 – The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) has dismissed a circulating notice announcing its temporary closure as fake. The viral document, dated 17th April 2025, claimed the university would shut down due to insolvency, sparking panic among students and staff.

Fake Notice Goes Viral

A notice bearing the university’s letterhead surfaced online, stating that TUK would close its doors on 21st April 2025 due to financial insolvency. It was signed under the name of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Benedict M. Mutua, the Vice-Chancellor.

Key points from the fake notice included:

  • A declaration of insolvency
  • A temporary shutdown effective 21st April 2025

However, the university has since clarified that the document is fraudulent.

University’s Official Response

In a swift rebuttal, TUK authorities confirmed that no such closure was planned and that operations were running normally.

“The notice in circulation is fake and did not originate from the Technical University of Kenya. We urge the public to disregard it and confirm any official communications through our verified channels,” a university spokesperson stated.

Public Reaction and Next Steps

Students and staff expressed relief after the university’s clarification but raised concerns over the spread of misinformation.

“I was shocked when I saw the notice. Thankfully, it’s not true, but whoever did this caused unnecessary panic,” said a third-year engineering student.
