In a dramatic turn of events, police officers from Wajir Police Station have successfully apprehended two suspects linked to a brazen robbery at Shawal Petrol Station along Mandera Road in Wajir township. The suspects, identified as 49-year-old John Mwaura and 28-year-old Muia Mutuku, were arrested following a swift response to a distress call reporting an ongoing heist at the petrol station.
The incident, which unfolded in the dead of night, saw a gang of five armed thugs, dressed in jungle uniforms and impersonating police officers, storm the petrol station. The assailants overpowered the watchman and pump attendant, tying their hands with ropes before making off with Sh30,000 in cash. However, their escape was cut short as police officers launched a hot pursuit, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
During the arrest, the duo was found in possession of incriminating items, including a mallet, an Administration Police jungle jacket, a military jungle trouser, and a military jungle jacket. These items further solidified their involvement in the crime, as they matched the description provided by witnesses at the scene.
The swift action by the police not only led to the recovery of stolen cash but also prevented further harm to the petrol station staff. The suspects are currently undergoing processing and are expected to appear in court soon. Meanwhile, the hunt for the remaining three suspects still at large continues, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
The bravery and quick response of the Wajir Police Station officers have been commended, and their efforts have brought a sense of relief to the local community.
