CBK Rolls Out New Kenya Banknotes with Enhanced Security

Nairobi, Kenya – November 20, 2024: The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced the rollout of updated Kenyan currency banknotes for denominations of KES 50, KES 100, KES 200, and KES 500. This follows the earlier release of the redesigned KES 1,000 banknotes in August 2024.

Key updates to the new banknotes include:

  1. Governor’s Signature: The signature of CBK Governor Dr. Kamau Thugge.
  2. Treasury PS Signature: The signature of Principal Secretary, National Treasury, Dr. Chris Kiptoo.
  3. Print Year: The year of print marked as 2024.
  4. Enhanced Security Threads: New color-changing effects unique to each denomination.

Other design features remain consistent with the 2019 series banknotes, ensuring easy recognition and use.

Circulation of Existing Notes

The CBK clarified that existing banknotes remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the newly issued currency. The public is advised to verify detailed features on the CBK’s official website (www.centralbank.go.ke).
