MORE than 800,000 students who sat for last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam did not apply to further their education.
The institution responsible for awarding these opportunities, KUCCPS, said only 895,232 out of 1,780,806 students submitted applications between February 7 and March 4 this year.
Speaking at the Insurance Plaza, South C, Nairobi yesterday, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome said nearly 50 percent of the candidates did not apply for the opportunities.
After the KCPE results were announced, Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu had asked chiefs to locate 48,000 candidates who scored an E grade, so they too could learn skills.
Out of those who submitted applications, 258,935 will join universities in the country. Public universities received more students compared to private universities.
“The number of female students has continued to increase in technical and arts colleges compared to male students,” said Ms. Wahome.
