In response to widespread misinformation circulating online regarding the redeployment of secondary school teachers in line with the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC), on 30th April 2024, the Ministry of Education of Kenya has issued a statement debunking these claims.
Rumors had surfaced suggesting a comprehensive restructuring of the education system, particularly focusing on the assignment of teachers to specific subjects based on school categories and curriculum requirements.
Reports purportedly originating from Citizen TV outlined a detailed plan where National schools would exclusively offer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses, while Extra County schools would concentrate on Creative Arts and Sports, and County and Sub County schools would emphasize humanities subjects.
“All National schools to offer STEM courses, Extra County schools to offer Creative Arts & Sports. All County and Sub County schools to offer humanities. Teachers to be re-deployed based on subject combination beginning Dec 2024.” A viral report read.
However, the Ministry of Education swiftly denounced these reports as false and urged educators and the public to disregard such misleading information. In an official statement obtained by K47 Digital News, the ministry emphasized the inaccuracy of the claims and cautioned against falling prey to baseless insinuations.
“The information contained therein is false. Ignore the unwanted insinuations,” the ministry’s statement clarified.
The Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC), introduced by the Kenyan government, aims to revolutionize the country’s education system by emphasizing skills development and practical application of knowledge. While the CBC represents a significant shift in educational paradigms, the Ministry of Education is committed to implementing it responsibly and transparently.
The dissemination of false information related to educational policies can create unnecessary confusion and anxiety among teachers, students, and parents. The ministry’s prompt response to correct the misinformation underscores its dedication to fostering clarity and understanding within the education sector.
As Kenya prepares for the continued rollout of the CBC, it is imperative that stakeholders rely on verified information from official sources. The Ministry of Education remains vigilant against misinformation campaigns that could disrupt the smooth implementation of educational reforms aimed at enhancing the quality and relevance of learning experiences for students nationwide.
Educators are encouraged to stay updated through credible channels and official announcements from the Ministry of Education to ensure accurate understanding and effective adaptation to the evolving educational landscape shaped by the Competence-Based Curriculum.
