At least 500 displaced households in Angatta Barikkoi, Transmara South Sub-County, Narok County, have received emergency shelter assistance following renewed conflict that has left hundreds of families homeless during the festive season. The intervention was confirmed in a statement by the Kenya Red Cross Society, which said the support was delivered by IOM Kenya, with funding from the European Union’s humanitarian arm, EU ECHO.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the emergency assistance was aimed at cushioning vulnerable families who were forced to flee their homes due to escalating violence in the area. The relief items included essential shelter materials such as tarpaulins and household supplies to help families cope with exposure to harsh weather conditions as they remain displaced.

The clashes in Angatta Barikkoi have been widely reported by national media, including Citizen TV, People Daily, and Capital FM, which indicate that the conflict is largely linked to long-standing land disputes between communities in Transmara South. Reports suggest that tensions between rival groups escalated rapidly, leading to the burning of homes, displacement of residents, and destruction of livelihoods.

Recent figures cited by the Kenya Red Cross and security agencies indicate that over 1,800 people have been displaced, with more than 250 houses reportedly torched within a short period. Many of the affected families are currently sheltering in schools, churches, and open fields, with limited access to food, clean water, healthcare, and sanitation facilities.

The humanitarian situation has drawn concern from multiple agencies. IOM Kenya, in coordination with the Kenya Red Cross and county authorities, has been conducting rapid needs assessments to determine the scale of displacement and prioritize urgent interventions. EU ECHO’s support is part of its broader humanitarian assistance to communities affected by conflict and disasters across Kenya, as previously highlighted by the European Union Delegation to Kenya.

In its statement, the Kenya Red Cross emphasized that the shelter support provided to the 500 households is only the first phase of assistance, noting that more support will continue in the coming days as humanitarian partners mobilize additional resources. Aid agencies warn that without sustained intervention, the situation could deteriorate further, especially with schools closed for the holidays and families exposed to insecurity.

The Kenyan government has also stepped in to address the security situation. According to reports by People Daily and Capital FM, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen declared parts of Transmara South and Transmara West as security-disturbed areas, allowing for heightened security operations. A 30-day security alert and localized curfews were imposed to contain the violence and prevent further destruction of property.

Security officials, including the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, have warned that individuals inciting violence or funding the clashes will face the full force of the law. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the attacks, as peace efforts are intensified on the ground.

Political leaders have also weighed in. Narok Governor Patrick ole Ntutu, quoted by Standard Media, urged communities in Angatta Barikkoi to embrace peace and dialogue, warning that continued violence would only deepen poverty and suffering. Similar calls were echoed by national leaders, including KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, who condemned the destruction of homes and displacement of innocent families.

Humanitarian experts note that the Angatta Barikkoi crisis highlights the recurring challenge of unresolved land disputes in parts of Narok County. Without long-term solutions, including community dialogue, fair land adjudication, and sustained government presence, aid agencies fear that displacement cycles will continue.

As families spend the festive season away from their homes, the emergency shelter support offers temporary relief. However, the Kenya Red Cross, IOM Kenya, and EU ECHO stress that continued humanitarian assistance and durable peace efforts are critical to restoring stability and dignity for the affected communities in Transmara South.
