Thursday 3 August, President William Ruto presided over the official opening and handing over of the charter to the Open University of Kenya (OUK) in Konza, Machakos County.

Equity CEO James Mwangi has been appointed as the university’s chancellor.“We are investing Kenyan money in this project, so it benefits not only the people of Machakos, but also all Kenyans,” said the head of state.

The first group of students will be registered in September.Speaking at the inauguration of the university, the Education CS Machugo said, “The university will open up new opportunities for Kenyan students as they can access affordable education and nurture their aspirations.”

In a letter sent to Cabinet Education Minister Ezekiel Machugo in early June, the university committee said the recommendations for opening the university were adopted at a special meeting with the board of trustees, held on June 7.

President William Ruto also visited Konza Technopolis in Ukambani region.

The Cabinet’s Minister of Information and Digital Economy, Eliud Owolo, and Makueni Governor Mutola Kilonzo, among other leaders, were also present.

PM Musalia Mudavadi, in a statement noted that Education for all is a worthwhile investment. “I am delighted to be part of this momentous occasion as we inaugurate the newest addition to our nation’s education landscape – the state-of-the-art Open University of Kenya!”

Musalia described the Open University of Kenya as a unique online institution that will position Kenya as a leader in education exports within Africa.”This milestone demonstrates our unwavering commitment to fostering knowledge, innovation, and excellence for future generations. Let’s embrace the limitless opportunities this university brings, empowering young minds to shape a brighter future together.” Added Mudavadi.

According to reports gathered by K47 news team, President William Ruto, 14 years ago as Minister of Higher Education in Kibaki’s era, conceived the idea of an Open University in Kenya and signed a Cabinet Memo. It never happened.

Today, a year into his Administration, he officially handed a Charter to Open University of Kenya.
