On Saturday morning, chaos ensued along the bustling Thika Highway as a collision between a school bus and a public service vehicle (PSV) brought traffic to a standstill. The incident, which occurred in the Kuraiha area near the Mang’u High School footbridge, left commuters stranded and authorities scrambling to manage the aftermath.
According to a police report, the PSV, owned by Meru Mekina Sacco, veered out of control and collided with a Thika High School bus transporting students to Nairobi for a sporting event. The collision resulted in significant damage to both vehicles, with the school bus sustaining rear-end damage while the Matatu bore the brunt of the impact at the front.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported among the 47 passengers aboard the school bus. However, the same cannot be said for the occupants of the Matatu. Nine passengers sustained injuries in the collision and were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
As emergency responders rushed to the scene, traffic congestion worsened along Thika Highway, affecting commuters traveling in both directions. The snarl-up stretched for miles, causing frustration and delays for motorists attempting to navigate the congested thoroughfare.
In the aftermath of the accident, authorities swiftly took action to manage the situation. The damaged Matatu was towed to Juja Police Station for further investigation, while the school bus was also transported to the same facility pending inspection. Police officials worked diligently to gather evidence and assess the extent of the damage, aiming to determine the cause of the collision and any potential liabilities.
Meanwhile, traffic police officers deployed additional personnel to assist with traffic control and ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians in the affected area. Despite their efforts, congestion persisted for several hours, disrupting travel plans for countless individuals and underscoring the importance of road safety measures.
In the wake of the incident, concerns were raised about the state of road infrastructure and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. Community members called for enhanced measures to prevent similar accidents in the future, emphasizing the importance of driver education and vehicle maintenance.
As authorities continue their investigation into the collision, commuters are urged to exercise caution while traveling along Thika Highway and other busy roadways. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of reckless driving and the importance of prioritizing safety on our roads.
In the coming days, efforts will be made to alleviate congestion and restore normalcy to Thika Highway, but the impact of the collision will linger as a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the responsibility we all share to ensure the safety of our communities on the road.
