Nandi Senator Hon. Samson Cherargei has strongly condemned the killing of civilians in a violent land tussle in Angata Baragoi, Samburu County, calling for the immediate arrest of the rogue security officers involved.
In a statement released on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Senator Cherargei expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as a national tragedy.
“My deepest condolences to the families of Angata Baragoi who lost their loved ones,” Senator Cherargei stated.
He further added, “The massacre in Angata Baragoi is very tragic to the consciousness of the nation. The trigger-happy rogue security officers must be arrested, prosecuted, and jailed for murder.”
Reports from the ground indicate that the violence erupted over a bitter land dispute, with locals accusing a powerful and unnamed politician of orchestrating the chaos in a bid to grab ancestral land. Tensions flared into deadly violence as civilians clashed with security officers, leading to fatalities.
Amid the chaos, two police officers were reportedly shot with arrows that pierced their skulls during the fierce protest, highlighting the gravity of the confrontation.
Residents of Baragoi have called for urgent government intervention, demanding justice for the victims and protection of their ancestral lands from politically motivated encroachments. They maintain that the killings were unjustified and that the officers involved used excessive and lethal force against unarmed civilians.
As pressure mounts, Kenyans on social media have rallied behind Senator Cherargei’s demand for accountability, using hashtags such as #JusticeForBaragoi to amplify their calls for swift legal action against those responsible.
The government is yet to release an official statement regarding the tragic incident, but human rights groups have also promised to take up the matter and ensure justice is served.
This latest tragedy in Baragoi has reignited concerns over land disputes in Northern Kenya, where issues of historical injustices and political interference continue to fuel deadly confrontations.
