“As a country we have lost a legend. Rest in Peace 🕊️ Kelvin and my heartfelt condolences to the family. ” Laurence Kitema, a social media user posted.

Kelvin Kiptum, the 24-year-old world marathon record holder, along with his 36-year-old Rwandan coach Gervais Hakizimana, tragically lost their lives in a fatal road accident near Eldoret.

Kiptum, who was driving, and Hakizimana died instantly, while a third occupant sustained severe injuries, as confirmed by the police.

Kiptum’s remarkable marathon achievement, a world record time of 2:00:35 established in the Chicago Marathon last October, was recently officially recognized by World Athletics.

Interestingly, Kiptum had transitioned from shorter distance races to marathon running just a year before accomplishing this record-setting feat.
