Residents of Longisa town in Bomet County were left in shock after a police vehicle lost control and rammed into several roadside kiosks before coming to a stop inside a local hotel.
The accident, involving a Land Cruiser from Longisa Police Station, occurred after the driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid pedestrians. Eyewitnesses claim the vehicle was speeding before it swerved off the road, causing significant damage to wooden structures along the roadside.

Increased Road Safety Efforts Amid Rising Accidents
The incident comes at a time when the Kenya Police Service, in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and other stakeholders, is intensifying road safety campaigns ahead of the festive season.
Traffic Commandant Grace Kaikai emphasized the importance of these sensitization exercises, which aim to enforce traffic laws, educate motorists, and ensure safer travel across the country during a period often marred by increased road accidents.
Special attention is being directed at boda boda operators, who are a significant part of Kenya’s transport system but also contribute heavily to road accident statistics.

Alarming Road Safety Statistics
According to NTSA, Kenya records over 3,000 road accident fatalities annually, costing the economy between 3-5% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists, account for the majority of these deaths.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the figures to be even higher, highlighting the urgent need for sustained road safety campaigns.
New Measures for Festive Season Travelers
To ease congestion on major routes like the Northern Corridor, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has introduced alternative travel routes for those heading to Western Kenya. This strategic move aims to reduce traffic buildup and improve road safety during the busy season.
Additionally, Nakuru County has allocated Ksh 3 million for driver sensitization programs, including training sessions for boda boda riders. The County Road Safety Committee remains at the forefront of advocating for responsible road use.
Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
Authorities are urging Kenyans to remain cautious not only on the roads but also in crowded areas such as shopping malls, markets, and public transport hubs. The Interior Ministry has flagged an expected rise in petty crimes, including pickpocketing and muggings, during the festive period.
With the Usalama Barabarani initiative in full swing, the government hopes to reduce road fatalities and ensure safer travel for all Kenyans.
