Police Seize Contraband Sugar and Counterfeit Liquor in Raids

Garissa, Bungoma – December 5, 2024

In a dramatic night operation, police in Garissa intercepted 88 bags of suspected contraband sugar on the Modika-Modogashe road, following a high-speed chase involving two Toyota Probox vehicles. The operation, conducted by the Border Police patrol team, unfolded after the officers noticed suspicious activity at Nuno area.

According to reports from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shared on X on December 4, 2024, the vehicles, bearing registration numbers KDP 613D and KDN 745J, attempted to flee upon being flagged down. The officers managed to immobilize both vehicles after a pursuit.

Upon inspection, the cars were found carrying 88 bags of sugar branded SAHA, each weighing 25 kilograms. The vehicles and their illicit cargo were detained, pending verification by a multi-agency team.

Crackdown in Bungoma Nets Counterfeit Liquor

Meanwhile, detectives in Kimilili, Bungoma County, uncovered a stash of counterfeit second-generation liquor in a separate operation. The haul included:

  • 120 bottles of Smart Vodka (250ml),
  • 65 bottles of County Spirits,
  • 20 bottles of Kibao Vodka, and
  • 40 bottles of Chrome.

The seizure occurred during an ambush on a motorist allegedly distributing the illicit alcohol. An inventory of the confiscated goods has been prepared, and the case has been handed over to a multi-agency task force for further investigation.

Public Safety Alert Ahead of Festive Season

Authorities are cautioning the public to remain vigilant against unscrupulous vendors capitalizing on the festive season. Counterfeit goods, particularly illicit liquor, pose significant health risks to unsuspecting consumers.
