Lavington residents to protest development of 13-story block

Peaceful protests will be held on Thursday at 9.30 am along Mbaazi Avenue.

“Greetings! We the residents of Mbaazi and Hendred avenue and members of MBAAZI and AVENUE RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (MARA) invite your station/newspaper to cover our peaceful protest as a way of opposing and alerting authorities about developers encroaching our properties.” A letter seen by k47 digital news team read.

According to the letter, the exercise to build a 3-store block will ruin the environment.

“They are ruining the environment by building unregulated high-rise buildings.They plan 512 units in a 13-story block on little more than an acre at LR 330/155.”

Nairobi Becoming a Concrete Jungle:

The Lavington residents association says Nairobi is becoming a concrete jungle. They questioned where their kids will play from if the building is set up.

“Where will our children play? What about traffic, sewage and water?”

Trees Cuts:

The association argues that trees have already been cut and dug up the land to bedrock level.

They demanded that the land be surrendered and trees replanted.

“Let them bring back that earth and replant the trees. And provide some compliant architectural designs. The zoning rules state developers can build apartments of ground plus 4 floors.”

Demonstration Date:

The demonstration is scheduled to happen on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 9.30am.

“We shall assemble along Mbaazi Avenue, at the entrance of the site which is next to Heritage Court (viewable on Google Maps) and close to Geco Car wash.”

Governor stoppage order:

The Nairobi City County is said to have issued an enforcement notice on 4/10/2023 to the owners of the above property to “stop construction activities immediately.”

The office of The Governor also issued a suspension notice by letter on 9/1O/2023 to the same owner asking them to suspend activities at the site and call for a meeting with the residents of the area.

As of today, the construction is still ongoing in contempt of the two notices and no public participation has been called.

“Your presence and coverage at this picket are highly appreciated.” A letter to the media reads.
