In a somber announcement, East African Cables has confirmed the passing of its Board Chairman, Dr. M.G. Waweru, on Friday, July 5, 2024. Dr. Waweru, who had been at the helm of the company since June 2017, leaves behind a legacy of leadership and innovation that has significantly shaped the company’s trajectory over the past seven years.
TransCentury PLC Chairperson, Shaka Kariuki, expressed heartfelt condolences in a statement to newsrooms, remembering Dr. Waweru as a visionary leader. “Dr. Waweru’s unwavering dedication, insightful guidance, and pioneering spirit laid the foundation for our Group’s success. Throughout his tenure, his contributions were immeasurable, and his legacy will forever be etched in the history of our company and in our hearts,” Kariuki stated.
Under Dr. Waweru’s stewardship, East African Cables saw significant advancements. Before his tenure at East African Cables, Dr. Waweru served as the Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) from 2003 to 2012. During his time at KRA, he was pivotal in transforming the authority, leading to a notable surge in tax collection. His outstanding performance earned him the prestigious Chief Order of the Burning Spear from the late President Mwai Kibaki, a testament to his significant contributions to Kenya’s public sector.
Dr. Waweru’s influence extended beyond his role at East African Cables and KRA. He was one of the founding members of TransCentury PLC, where his strategic vision and leadership were key to the company’s success. In recognition of his remarkable contributions to both the public and private sectors, KCA University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in 2022.
