Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa in a major late-window breakthrough, with the England international now closing in on a move to the Emirates Stadium.

According to the latest reports on Wednesday, August 19, Arsenal have agreed a package worth around £50 million plus add-ons for the 28-year-old centre-back. Personal terms have also been agreed on a long-term contract, with only the final formalities standing between Konsa and becoming an Arsenal player.

The transfer has been widely reported as a major breakthrough after Arsenal and Villa spent weeks apart in their valuation of the defender. Villa had previously been reported to value Konsa at around £60 million to £65 million, while Arsenal initially attempted to negotiate a considerably lower fee.

Konsa medical reportedly next

The next major step is expected to be Konsa’s medical. Reports indicate that the England defender is scheduled to undergo medical checks within the next 24 to 48 hours before completing his move to Arsenal.

Fabrizio Romano has also reported the agreement with his trademark “Here We Go” confirmation, stating that the fee is £50 million plus add-ons and that a long-term contract has been agreed.

That means Arsenal supporters could soon see the experienced Premier League defender officially unveiled as the club’s latest major signing.

Why Arsenal moved for Konsa

The move has been strongly influenced by Arsenal’s defensive situation. William Saliba is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious back injury while on international duty, while Jurrien Timber has also been dealing with a groin problem.

Konsa therefore provides Mikel Arteta with an experienced option capable of playing at centre-back and, when required, operating at right-back.

The defender has established himself as one of Aston Villa’s most reliable players since joining the club in 2019. His Premier League experience, defensive consistency and ability to play out from the back make him a logical fit for Arsenal’s possession-based approach.

Arsenal had also explored alternatives during negotiations, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah. The Gunners’ interest in Konsa, however, remained strong despite the difficulty in reaching an agreement with Villa.

A major change for Aston Villa

Konsa’s departure would represent another significant blow to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa squad.

Villa have already experienced substantial movement during the summer transfer window, including the departures of Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne. Reuters also reports that Villa have been strengthening their squad with additions such as goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and defender Matteo Ruggeri.

For Arsenal, meanwhile, the Konsa deal represents another statement of intent as the reigning Premier League champions prepare for the new campaign.

The £50 million fee may initially attract debate, particularly given Konsa’s age, but Arsenal are clearly prioritising proven Premier League quality at a time when defensive depth is becoming increasingly important.

If the medical is successfully completed, Konsa will sign his long-term contract and complete his move to north London.

For Arsenal fans, the message is simple: the deal is now extremely close, and the “Here We Go” stage has arrived.
