Mikel Arteta has provided a fresh injury update ahead of Arsenal’s important Premier League clash against West Ham United, and the news is not what fans wanted to hear. The Arsenal manager confirmed that neither Jurrien Timber nor Mikel Merino will be available for the weekend fixture.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Arteta first reassured supporters that there were no new injury concerns following Arsenal’s last game.
“No [new concerns], everybody finished the game well. Yeah, nothing to add, I think,” Arteta said.
While that update came as positive news, attention quickly shifted to the fitness of Timber and Merino. Unfortunately for Arsenal supporters, Arteta ruled both players out of the upcoming match against West Ham.
“No, no chance for the weekend,” he stated.
The continued absence of Timber is becoming an increasing concern for Arsenal. The Dutch defender was initially expected to return much sooner, but recovery complications have delayed his comeback far beyond expectations.
Arteta admitted the situation has been frustrating for everyone involved, especially because the club believed the player was close to returning weeks ago.
“That’s been probably the most difficult thing to manage with the player, with myself as well, because we didn’t expect to take so long and at the moment it’s not fit to play,” the Arsenal boss explained.
There is now serious doubt over whether either Timber or Merino will play again before the season ends. When asked about their chances of featuring before the campaign concludes, Arteta could not offer any certainty.
“I don’t know. There’s still a fair bit to do. So everything has to be so smooth and quick if they want to have a chance to play any minutes.”
The injury setback comes at a critical point in Arsenal’s season. With the club still fighting for major honours and aiming to finish strongly, Arteta will need his available players to step up during the final weeks of the campaign.
Timber’s absence has been particularly disappointing given the excitement surrounding his arrival and the quality he was expected to bring to Arsenal’s defence. Injuries have prevented the defender from making the impact many fans anticipated.
Meanwhile, Merino’s continued absence also limits Arsenal’s midfield options during an intense run of fixtures. Squad depth could prove decisive as the pressure continues to rise in the closing stages of the season.
Despite the disappointing injury news, Arsenal will still head into the West Ham clash determined to secure another crucial victory. Arteta will hope his side can maintain momentum and keep their ambitions alive as the season approaches its dramatic conclusion.
