The Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has delivered 30,000 kilograms of dates to support drought-affected families in Kenya, providing timely relief as vulnerable communities prepare for the holy month of Ramadhan.

The humanitarian consignment arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where it was officially handed over by Mr. Osama Abuseem Alali, Head of Consular Affairs and National Services, on behalf of H.E. Dr. Salim Ibrahim AlNaqbi, Ambassador of the UAE to Kenya.

The donation was received by Aden Duale, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, alongside Dr. Ahmed Idris, Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Society. The announcement was shared via the Kenya Red Cross official X (formerly Twitter) account on 17th Feb 2026.

Timely Relief for Drought-Affected Families

The 30,000 kilograms of dates will go toward supporting families severely impacted by prolonged drought across several regions of Kenya. The country has faced recurring dry spells in recent years, leading to food insecurity, livestock losses, and strained livelihoods, particularly in arid and semi-arid counties.

Humanitarian agencies have warned that drought conditions have left thousands of households in urgent need of food assistance. The UAE’s donation comes at a crucial moment, not only addressing immediate nutritional needs but also offering culturally significant support as Muslim communities prepare to observe Ramadhan.

Dates hold particular importance during Ramadhan, traditionally used to break the daily fast. By providing this staple food item, the UAE’s support aligns both with emergency relief efforts and the spiritual needs of affected families.

Strengthening Kenya–UAE Humanitarian Ties

The donation underscores growing humanitarian cooperation between Kenya and the United Arab Emirates. The UAE has consistently supported relief initiatives in the Horn of Africa, particularly during periods of drought and other emergencies.

Speaking during the handover, officials emphasized the importance of international solidarity in addressing climate-related crises. Kenya continues to experience the effects of climate change, including unpredictable rainfall patterns that intensify food shortages.

The Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed that it will coordinate the distribution of the dates to ensure they reach the most vulnerable households. The organization has been at the forefront of drought response efforts, providing food aid, water trucking, nutrition support, and health services in affected communities.

Preparing for Ramadhan Amid Hardship

As communities prepare for Ramadhan, humanitarian partners are working to ease the burden on families struggling to secure daily meals. For many households, the holy month presents additional financial pressure, particularly where incomes have been disrupted by drought.

Continued Call for Support

Authorities and humanitarian organizations continue to call for sustained assistance to mitigate the long-term impacts of drought in Kenya. While emergency donations provide critical short-term relief, experts stress the need for climate adaptation strategies, water management solutions, and sustainable food systems.

The Kenya Red Cross reiterated its appreciation for the UAE’s support and encouraged continued collaboration between governments, humanitarian agencies, and development partners.

As drought conditions persist in parts of the country, partnerships such as this remain essential in safeguarding vulnerable populations and strengthening community resilience.
