Bukayo Saka has urged Arsenal to stay united and show character after their dramatic 3–2 home defeat to Manchester United brought an end to the club’s formidable unbeaten run at the Emirates Stadium. The loss, decided by a stunning late strike from Matheus Cunha, was only Arsenal’s third defeat in all competitions this season, but it was one that clearly stung both players and supporters alike.
Arsenal started the contest brightly on Sunday, dominating possession and tempo during an impressive opening half hour. That control was rewarded with the opening goal, as the Gunners looked set to extend their outstanding home form in one of the Premier League’s biggest fixtures. However, despite the strong start, the team were unable to fully impose themselves for the entire 90 minutes, something Saka admitted was a major source of frustration.
“I think we didn’t show our best level for the full game, which is frustrating,” Saka said after the match. “It’s such a big game with a lot riding on it. Obviously, the Emirates has been a place where we’ve been so strong this season.”
Manchester United gradually grew into the game and managed to turn the tide, punishing Arsenal for lapses in concentration. Although the Gunners showed resilience by fighting back to equalise late on, their joy was short-lived. Cunha’s long-range effort shortly afterwards proved decisive, sealing a narrow 3–2 defeat and ending Arsenal’s unbeaten home streak in heartbreaking fashion.
For Saka, the loss was particularly difficult to accept given the context of the season. Arsenal had lost just twice in their previous 34 matches across all competitions, underlining how rare and painful defeats have been in this campaign.
“It’s a tough loss to take, but we have to stick together,” Saka continued. “We go again next week; we’ll try and get back to winning ways.”
The England international also reflected on the fine margins that often define elite-level football. Arsenal had opportunities to extend their lead and potentially put the game out of reach, but failing to do so ultimately proved costly.
“In football, you can score, you can concede – it’s your reaction after it,” he explained. “Obviously, we would have wanted to make it 2–0, but we didn’t. Overall, we’re just not too happy with the performance.”
Despite the disappointment, there is little time for Arsenal to dwell on the setback. The fixture schedule remains relentless, with Champions League football returning midweek, followed by a challenging Premier League away trip to Leeds United next weekend. According to Saka, the team’s response in these upcoming matches will be crucial in shaping the remainder of their season.
“Yeah exactly. The journey’s not always going to be smooth, there’s going to be ups and downs,” he said. “It’s up to us to show our character next week.”
That mentality has been a defining feature of Arsenal’s campaign so far, and Saka was clear that the squad must now look forward rather than dwell on what cannot be changed.
“That’s all our focus is now, we can’t change the result now,” he added. “We look forward and onto next week.”
While the defeat to Manchester United was a bitter pill to swallow, Saka’s words reflect a calm determination within the Arsenal camp. With major fixtures on the horizon and silverware still firmly in sight, the Gunners know that how they respond to this setback could define their season.
