Cyrus Jirongo, who died following a horrific road accident along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway. The new revelations, backed by CCTV footage, forensic analysis, and witness accounts, have sparked widespread public interest and renewed debate over road safety, accountability, and the pace of high-profile investigations in Kenya.

In an official press release issued on December 16, 2025, the confirmed that it had commenced comprehensive investigations into the fatal crash that claimed the life of Hon. Jirongo on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area. According to the DCI, the late politician succumbed to severe injuries sustained in a violent head-on collision involving his personal vehicle and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus.

Fatal Crash Along Nakuru–Nairobi Highway

The accident occurred at approximately 2:19 a.m., a time when traffic along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway is relatively light but often dangerous due to high speeds and fatigue among drivers. Preliminary investigations by detectives indicate that Hon. Jirongo’s motor vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, collided head-on with a PSV bus, registration number KCU 576A, owned by Climax Company Ltd.

The impact of the collision was devastating. Investigators revealed that Hon. Jirongo’s vehicle was violently pushed approximately 25 metres from the point of impact, while the PSV bus came to a halt about 50 metres away. The severity of the crash immediately raised questions about speed, driver conduct, and visibility at the time of the accident.

Hon. Jirongo, a well-known businessman and politician with decades of influence in Kenya’s political landscape, was pronounced dead after sustaining fatal injuries in the crash. News of his death sent shockwaves across the country, prompting an outpouring of condolences and calls for a thorough and transparent investigation.

CCTV Footage Provides Critical Timeline

One of the most significant breakthroughs in the investigation has come from CCTV footage recovered from Eagol Petrol Station, located near the scene of the accident. According to the DCI, detectives secured the footage during scene documentation and subjected it to initial review and analysis.

The footage provides a minute-by-minute account of Hon. Jirongo’s final moments on the road.

At 2:18:40 a.m., CCTV cameras captured Hon. Jirongo driving into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction. Notably, he did not refuel. At 2:19:10 a.m., he stopped briefly at the station’s exit. Just nine seconds later, at 2:19:19 a.m., he made a right turn, rejoining the highway and driving back toward the Nairobi direction.

Tragically, at 2:19:25 a.m., the CCTV footage shows the PSV bus ramming into Hon. Jirongo’s vehicle. The collision occurred just seconds after he exited the petrol station, leaving little time for evasive action.

This precise timeline has become central to the investigation, helping detectives reconstruct the events leading up to the fatal impact and assess whether traffic rules were followed by all parties involved.

PSV Driver Questioned, Released on Cash Bail

The driver of the PSV bus, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has already been interrogated by detectives. According to the DCI statement, Githinji recorded an initial statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base, where he was questioned about the circumstances of the crash.

He has since been released on cash bail as investigations continue into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving. The DCI confirmed that the driver is required to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for further police action.

The decision to release the driver on cash bail has generated mixed reactions from the public, with some Kenyans demanding tougher measures in fatal road accident cases, especially those involving public service vehicles.

Forensic Experts and Homicide Detectives Deployed

In line with its mandate, the DCI deployed a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory to the scene. The team conducted preliminary examinations, secured key exhibits, and documented the crash site in detail.

Investigators are expected to revisit the scene for further forensic analysis as part of ongoing efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash. This includes assessing vehicle damage, skid marks, road conditions, lighting, and visibility at the time of the accident.

The involvement of homicide detectives underscores the seriousness with which the DCI is treating the case, despite it being classified as a traffic accident. In Kenya, fatal crashes often fall under intense scrutiny due to rising road fatalities and concerns over reckless driving.

Witnesses and Petrol Station Staff Give Statements

As part of the probe, detectives have also interviewed key witnesses, including the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant. Both individuals provided personal accounts of what transpired on the fateful night.

Their statements are expected to complement the CCTV footage and help investigators determine whether there were any unusual movements, mechanical issues, or external factors that may have contributed to the crash.

Additionally, detectives plan to record statements from passengers who were aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus at the time of the accident, as well as other motorists who may have witnessed the collision.

Focus on Hon. Jirongo’s Final Movements

Beyond the crash itself, investigators are examining Hon. Jirongo’s movements prior to the accident. According to the DCI, detectives are recording statements from individuals he interacted with earlier that night.

Of particular interest is a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi, where Hon. Jirongo was reportedly present before embarking on the ill-fated journey. Investigators are keen to establish timelines, destinations, and any factors that may have influenced his state before the accident, including fatigue or health-related issues.
