Laikipia County, Kenya – A dramatic security operation in Laikipia County on Thursday, October 31, 2025, led to the successful recovery of stolen livestock, thanks to a swift and coordinated response by police and other security agencies.
According to reports from the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was launched following an attack by armed bandits in Matwiku Sub-Location, within the volatile Kirima Division of Laikipia County.
At around 11:00 a.m., a herder was ambushed by gunmen while grazing livestock in the Mlima Jangili area. The attackers, believed to be part of a notorious rustling gang, made away with 30 sheep and goats and seven cows, sparking immediate alarm among local residents.
The distressed owner promptly reported the incident to the authorities, prompting a multi-agency security team to respond without delay. Acting on intelligence, the officers mounted a coordinated pursuit that led them to the Laikipia Nature Conservancy, where they managed to intercept the stolen animals.
A brief confrontation ensued, forcing the bandits to abandon the livestock and flee into nearby thickets. Although the armed suspects managed to escape, all the stolen animals were successfully recovered and returned to their rightful owner.
Police confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported during the operation. The security forces have since intensified patrols across the region to curb the rising cases of livestock theft and restore calm among pastoral communities.
In a statement released by the National Police Service, authorities commended the joint operation, highlighting the importance of collaboration between residents and security agencies in combating crime.
“The National Police Service commends the swift response and coordination among the security teams, which led to the successful recovery of the stolen livestock,” the statement read.
Residents have praised the police for their quick action, noting that cattle rustling has long threatened peace and livelihoods in parts of Laikipia and neighboring counties.
Security officials have urged the public to continue sharing timely information to assist ongoing efforts aimed at bringing the armed bandits to justice and maintaining lasting peace in the region.
